 OCO Current Activities

This is our effort to help orphans and other vulnerable children in South Sudan...

Provision of English Grammar Free Lessons to vulnerable children weekly

OCO volunteers give free lessons to vulnerable children every Friday to educate them slowly and promote the importance of education which is a vital asset to them.
Once the basic knowledge of English is given to these vulnerable children, it will be easier to train them in technical fields and help them shape their lives like other people in society.

Provision of free meal to vulnerable children once in a week

This activity is among the priorities of OCO as it enables vulnerable children enthusiasm, strengthens them physically, and encourages them to participate in other vital activities such as catechism classes.
The meal is given to the selective sample of small vulnerable children whose ages are so young compared to the rest. It is very tedious and almost impossible for these younger ones to survive since all vulnerable children (street children) have no secured meals at all.

Provision of clothes to vulnerable children twice a year

A sample of selectively vulnerable children is provided with two sets of clothes twice a year to feel the motherly care of OCO.
Like breastfeeding mothers, OCO seeks possible affordable means to provide sufficient motherly care to its children.
Friends of vulnerable children are asked to provide their used or unused shoes, slippers, or clothes to vulnerable children hence driving vulnerable children to the direction of unyielding hope.
OCO’s usually presented statement is this, “things we don’t need any more are helping vulnerable children who need them most.”
We request individuals to drop their donated items (clothes or shoes) at OCO Benevolence Store (OBS).
For more details about OBS, write us using the contacts you find on the About Us page.

Organization of games and sports activities

Currently, OCO organizes evening simple games and sports activities for vulnerable children. Activities that are organized in the evening hours include football, volleyball, and other local games of the society.
After the activities, vulnerable children are provided with water or juice, made to feel at home, and finally given good night talk which is meant for counseling.

Promotion of vulnerable children's self-reliance

This activity involves the provision of shoe maintenance items such as shoe polishing substances and rubbers.
A small number of vulnerable children are given all the requirements that are needed in this small business initiative, made independent to carry out their tasks and receive their own money. Polishing of one person’s shoes is paid at SSP 100 ($ one-sixth of a dollar) which is equivalent to three loaves of bread.
Successfully street children are given more and encouraged to expand their small business activity driving them away from crimes and moving them toward the direction of infallible hope while unsuccessful ones are advised more on how to carry out their tasks.

Vulnerable Children Farming Initiative

OCO agriculture department has already implemented this productive activity (VCFI) by locating the land to be used in 2021 as OCO - Orphans Farms.
This task is under the supervision of the agriculture department and it is directly overseen by the OCO top executive which endorses its smooth execution.
It aims at securing local food production for vulnerable children while at the same time encouraging community food production initiatives (CFPI).
OCO currently seeks support of agriculture tools and seeds from individuals and international organizations for the success of this farming activity.

Provision of medication to vulnerable children

OCO has taken this activity as one of its monthly carried out activities due to the expensiveness of medication. It is carried out once a month.
The sickest vulnerable children who are found lying down in the streets, corners, or market places are taken to hospitals on OCO’s bill. They are tested for the most suspected diseases and treated if they are treatable.
Their medication is financially and materially facilitated by OCO. This activity is aimed at monitoring the health status of vulnerable children and controlling the quick spread of dangerous sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

Conducting a detailed critical inspection of vulnerable children's situation

In order to know the causes of vulnerable children influx into Wau town, OCO has taken further steps to study these children's situation and the conditions that lead to efflux from their original places.
At this critical inspection, we also look at the possible solutions that can be applied for an immediate change of this unfortunate remarkable development.
We also aim at looking at the activities in which they are engaged either for survival or for amusement to help them from neglect, discrimination, violence, and abuse.

Giving them catechism lessons in local languages

OCO in collaboration with the neighboring churches intends to purify the hearts of these vulnerable children and bring them closer to Jesus Christ.
To understand the importance of God in everyone’s life these vulnerable children are highly encouraged to attend these lessons not only to receive catechism sacraments but for their sincere and complete purification.
Vulnerable children who are of Islam origin and who wish to continue with their faith in Islam are also helped to be taught by concerned Sheikhs.

Training of OCO staff in child development, discipline, and counseling

OCO staff are currently trained on various means of handling children, they are trained on child safeguarding.
They are trained on child protection policy, commitment to this policy, and how to detect the different forms of child abuse; physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and commercial abuse - exploitation.
Great emphasis is put on confidential recognition of child abuse; signs and indicators and how to report this abuse to the concerned authorities.
OCO team under this major training also covers the courses on traumatized children major-impacted counseling which is actually aimed at giving helpful advice to these children in order to release them not only from stress but from daily conditions of life.

Massive identification of orphans in Wau town

OCO team is engaged in massive registration of orphans and other vulnerable children in Wau town, to easily facilitate its normal delivery of services to these assistance worthy groups.
This mass identification of orphans and other vulnerable children is also aimed at taking the most accurate and viable statistics of these groups in the society for it is always visible that the number of vulnerable children continuously increases at unrecognized speed.
OCO's statistically equipped team is monthly reporting on the scale of vulnerable children influx in Wau town. Most of these vulnerable children are children whose parents have severely been hit not only by the current economic crisis but also by piercing poverty which is of course the inadequacy of food and other basic necessities of life.

Enrollment of orphans in schools and provision of their scholastic needs

OCO has taken this initiative in 2021 intending to encourage vulnerable children's access to education before it has established its own schools.
A small number of pupils are registered in various schools by OCO in its full responsibility with genuine notice taken from the relatives of the beneficiaries.
